Chapter 11

The rehearsal dinner was held in a chic microbrewery in the warehouse district, but Drew barely noticed the two giant silver brew tanks gleaming against one of the brick walls, or the exposed pipes and cement floor that lent a casual but classy ambience to the place.

He was too busy thinking about Maggie. Kissing her, tasting her, just starting to explore her sweet, soft body. They’d only just begun to scratch the surface. He could barely concentrate on this evening. Her scent was still in his nostrils, her taste still on his tongue. And all he wanted was more.

He felt better than he had in ages. Sondra wasn’t the same woman he’d known—the one who’d worked two jobs to get through college, who ate macaroni and cheese and ramen noodles to save money, and who’d never cared in her life whether or not she’d won or lost any kind of game. Seeing the demanding, hard edge to her made him worry for his brother’s happiness. He wondered if he should take it up with Xander, at the risk of appearing spiteful or jealous.

But it appeared he had another problem. She was sitting right next to him at the bar, looking over the beer flight menu, wearing a little black dress with straps that crisscrossed her lovely back. Her hair was done up in some complicated twisty way with little wisps curling on her lovely, kissable neck. She had this amazing ability to morph from someone demure and sweet in a mommy nightgown to hot-blonde-I-want-to-do-right-now.

Except he’d wanted to do her even in the mommy nightgown.

But there was more than the sexual attraction going on. She was smart and sharp witted and fun to be around.

And she’d felt so soft in his arms, and he liked the way she kissed and those little noises she made—and he knew, dammit—knew right down to his marrow—that he could make up for all her sex starvedness. He wouldn’t mind helping her with that a bit. Not at all.

But watching her as she intently studied the menu, he felt his heart twist a little. He knew the kind of guy she needed. Someone who would treat her with care—not that she wasn’t tough as nails—but she deserved someone who would look out for her feelings, respect her, love her. She’d been through enough. And he was not in a position to do that.

Oh, he was over getting dumped and heartbroken—at least, he was finding his way out. It didn’t pain him so much anymore to look at Sondra and Xander together. He didn’t recognize her anymore as being the woman he’d once loved. But there was no way he was ready to plunge into a new relationship.

Especially with a woman like Maggie who had a kid and clear expectations, whether she realized it or not, of something permanent. He needed something light and casual and he knew—he knew—that no matter what Maggie would have him believe, she wasn’t the light and casual type.
